Chaos. A state of disorder, a situation characterized by confusion, lack of organization, or randomness.
An accident has happened on your STCC group ride and there are so many questions going through your mind. Is the rider/riders ok? What do we do? There’s traffic, why aren’t they moving them off the street? What about that traffic? How do we make them aware there’s been an accident and direct them around the group? Should I call 911?
An accident on our group ride is something none of us wants to experience, but things do happen and, at STCC, we do our best to make sure our Ride Leaders know the right thing to do on one of those very rare occurrences. They should be in charge, and know in advance what needs to be done to ensure the safety of those involved and the remainder of the group. In an accident you should be looking to them for guidance and direction. Its all a part of our training and education to give them the tools and confidence needed to calm the chaos that is bound to happen in those situations. Chaos can evolve into panic, making a difficult situation even worse, creating an unsafe environment for all.
As one part of training for our Ride Leaders, we hold on-bike classes with simulated situations to help them predict how they will need to react in the unfortunate event of an accident in the group ride. We are holding two sessions for our Ride Leaders during the month of September. Guess what? At the suggestion of one of our Ride Leaders, we are inviting a limited number of members to attend the sessions, and participate as “extras” to give you an idea of the work and responsibility accepted by this wonderful group of volunteers.
